be employed during police or other <strong>for</strong>ms of restraint (<strong>for</strong> example, the restraint of<br />

a psychiatric patient). One of these involves the placement of pressure on a person’s<br />

chest, back, or abdomen when that person is on the ground (face-up or face-down).<br />

The typical situation is a suspect who has been resisting arrest and has been <strong>for</strong>ced<br />

to the ground. Several officers are atop the suspect, some with their knees on the<br />

suspect’s back, while attempts are made to handcuff the suspect (Fig. 15.26). Other<br />

procedures that may be employed during the restraint process include the use of<br />

“pepper spray” and/or an electrical stun gun device. Placing a restrained person in<br />

the “hog-tie” position involves placing the individual face-down on the ground, with<br />
