landscape feature of <strong>Santana</strong>.<br />

“Casas Redon<strong>da</strong>s” Thatched houses<br />

These buildings are more common in the parish of São Jorge and are thus<br />

commonly known as São Jorge Houses, are a landscape, historical and architectural trait<br />

with unique characteristics and high tourism and ethnographic interest.<br />

Water mills<br />

Water mills, once common in <strong>Madeira</strong>’s landscape, are a cultural landmark of the<br />

importance that cereals had in the economy and lives of <strong>Santana</strong>’s inhabitants. At the<br />

site of Achadinha, parish of São Jorge, there is a functional water mill, where the corn is<br />

still grinded, thus being a cultural heritage of considerable touristic interest.<br />

“Fortim do Faial” fort<br />

The “Fortim do Faial” fort, recently restored, is the only monument of the military<br />

heritage in the municipality of <strong>Santana</strong>. It is a building of high tourist interest, both for<br />

its architecture as well as for the beautiful landscape on the parish of Faial.<br />

“Homem em Pé” Basaltic Dyke<br />

It is a very well known geomonument of high landscape, geomorphological,<br />

ethnographic and tourist value and is considered one of the geological ex-libris of the<br />

altitude landscapes in the municipality of <strong>Santana</strong>.<br />

“Pico Ruivo” and central mountainous massif peaks<br />
