Laboratory of Marine Biology and Oceanography, Department of Biology, University of<br />

<strong>Madeira</strong>, develops research projects mainly in the area of marine biology and fisheries.<br />

• JBMRV - <strong>Madeira</strong> Botanical Garden Eng. Rui Vieira (www.sra.pt / jarbot). The JBMRV<br />

dedicated to research of Macaronesian flora and in particular the study of plant<br />

biodiversity in the archipelago of <strong>Madeira</strong>. The research undertaken in this institution<br />

focuses on various aspects of systematics and biology of plants, essential to the<br />

conservation of plant diversity and other areas of research.<br />

• PNM - Parque Natural <strong>da</strong> <strong>Madeira</strong> (www.pnm.pt). PNM main focus is to promote and<br />

participate in scientific research in the field of nature protection and the environment.<br />

• IH - Hydrographic Institute (www.hidrografico.pt). The Hydrographic Institute as state<br />

Laboratory plays an important role in support of the scientific community in the areas of<br />

marine science and technology, development of multidisciplinary projects in R&D, in<br />

partnership with national and foreign institutions in the fields of Physical Oceanography,<br />

Marine Geology, Chemistry, Geography, Navigation and environmental protection.<br />

• IM - Institute of Meteorology (www.meteo.pt). IM conducts research in the fields of<br />

meteorology, climatology and sismology, focusing its research efforts on projects that<br />

accrue to direct applications to use in operational activity, looking for a progressive<br />

improvement of the information available to its users.<br />

15.1.10. Permanent monitoring plots<br />

The marine area of Rocha do Navio site and the land areas of laurel forest and the<br />

Central mountains, Natura 2000 sites, due to the species and habitats these sites<br />

possess, some of which are of conservation priority in the Habitats Directive, are areas<br />

subject to permanent monitoring. Besides the sites that integrate the ecological network<br />

of the European Union, other areas classified under different regimes of protection are<br />

subject to permanent monitoring of its natural values. In all these areas, various<br />

monitoring programs are developed focising about diverse ecological parameters of<br />

various endemic and indigenous flora and fauna species and also about human activities<br />

and their impacts.<br />

The control of rodent populations and invasive plant species, by their ability to<br />

naturalization and destruction of natural habitats, shall be made either within the<br />
