wind turbines, which due to their proportions require the operation of heavy equipment<br />

to proceed with the installation.<br />

Another visible impact in the terrestrial areas, regardless of vegetation, soil and<br />

climatic conditions, is the wide dispersion and density of exotic naturalized species with<br />

invasive carachteristics, which threaten native vegetation and biotopes’ natural<br />

regeneration capacity by preventing natural ecological succession of native plant<br />

communities.<br />

12.1.4. Relevant Management Practices<br />

The conservation of seeds of various species in the seed bank is as fun<strong>da</strong>mental<br />

measure for their long-term survival. The survival of many species depends on the<br />

combination of seed conservation with control and eradication programs of the Invasive<br />

species within the boun<strong>da</strong>ries of classified and adjoining areas.<br />

The increased touristic load demands the implementation of appropriate<br />

management regulations for the Central Mountainous Massif and laurel forest public use<br />

and, in particular scenic footpaths with greater influx of tourists.<br />

12.2. COASTAL AND MARINE AREA<br />

The coastal and marine component of the proposed <strong>Santana</strong> Biosphere Reserve<br />

corresponds to the protected area of the Ilhéu <strong>da</strong> Viúva islet, Site of Community Interest<br />

of Natura 2000 and adjacent marine area. The Ilhéu <strong>da</strong> Viúva islet Site (<strong>Santana</strong>’s<br />

Biosphere Reserve marine Core area) has a total area of 1822 hectares and is bounded<br />

on the west by Ponta de São Jorge and on east by Ponta dos Clérigos, and the line<br />
