MANUAL 4 – BITUMINOUS PAVEMENT SEALS
Where the binder is applied by a motorised hand sprayer, one Chippy will be sufficient.
Photo 4.12
The aggregate is loaded into the Chippy by wheelbarrows (± 66 litres) and the Chippy guided
along the length of the road in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Using a hand sprayer and one Chippy, the procedure illustrated in Figure 4.6 is recommended
for applying the aggregate using 2 3 105 litre drums at the calculated spacing.
Figure 4.6: Procedure for applying aggregate
Once sufficient stone has been applied and one can walk on the surface without coming into
contact with the wet binder, the bare spaces can be filled with more stone. The aggregate
must be placed shoulder to shoulder. However, care must be taken not to have double layers
of stone.
Gently broom the surface to distribute any loose stone that may be forming double layers.
The better this process is done, the better and more efficient the seal will be.
Once the surface has been covered with the aggregate, without bare patches of binder
showing, rolling with the pedestrian roller can commence.
