MODULe 6: <strong>Construction</strong> of an Otta seal<br />

1. Specification<br />

The specification will call for the construction of either a double Otta seal or single Otta<br />

seal, with a sand-seal bituminous surface treatment of a specified grading, constructed in<br />

accordance with the relevant specifications referred to in the scope of work in the contract<br />

documents.<br />

2. Materials<br />

Materials required for the construction of the Otta seal are:<br />

• Surfacing aggregate of the specified grading.<br />

• MC or penetration grade bitumen binder.<br />

• Bitumen emulsion for priming of base (if applicable).<br />

3. <strong>Construction</strong> plant and equipment<br />

The following specialised plant and equipment is recommended, to promote the construction<br />

of the Otta seal surfacing by labour-intensive methods:<br />

• Shovels<br />

• Brooms<br />

• Builders’ wheelbarrows (capacity ± 65 – 67 litres)<br />

• Heavy duty hose with spray nozzle, 100 m<br />

• 7 mm sisal rope, 2 3 50 m rolls<br />

• Reinforced paper, 4 rolls 3 1 metre wide<br />

• Pan and cylinder equipment for testing aggregate<br />

• Steel pegs, 300 mm 3 9 mm<br />

• Chalk-line equipment<br />

• Steel tape, 50 m<br />

• 105 litre drums open ended with handles for lifting (Workshop drawing LIC 010) for<br />

spotting aggregate (Photo 4.43)<br />

• Manually operated chip spreader (Photo 4.44) (Optional)<br />
