MODULe 5: <strong>Construction</strong> of a Cape seal<br />
1. Specification<br />
The specification will call for the construction of a Cape seal, consisting of either a 13,2 mm<br />
or 19 mm single seal with an application of a slurry seal, constructed in accordance with the<br />
relevant specifications referred to in the scope of work in the contract documents.<br />
2. Materials<br />
Materials required for the construction of the Cape seal are:<br />
• Surfacing aggregate of the specified size (obtained from a commercial source/<br />
quarry).<br />
• Bituminous binder in the form of a bitumen emulsion, either Anionic spray grade<br />
emulsion (60/40) or Cationic spray grade emulsion (65/35).<br />
• Slurry aggregate of the specified grading (obtained from a commercial source/<br />
quarry).<br />
• Slurry binder in the form of an Anionic stable grade emulsion (60/40) with Vinzyl resin<br />
as emulsifier.<br />
3. <strong>Construction</strong> plant and equipment<br />
The following specialised plant and equipment is recommended to promote the<br />
construction of the Cape seal surfacing by labour intensive methods:<br />
• Shovels<br />
• Brooms<br />
• Builders’ wheelbarrows (Capacity ± 65 – 67 litres)<br />
• Hammer<br />
• 7 mm sisal rope, 2 3 50 m rolls<br />
• Reinforced paper, 4 rolls 3 1 metre wide<br />
• Steel pegs, 300 mm 3 9 mm<br />
• Chalk-line equipment<br />
• Steel tape, 50 m<br />
• Squeegees (Workshop drawing LIC 005)<br />
• 5 3 25 litre measuring containers with lifting handle (Workshop drawing LIC 009)<br />
• 5 3 10 litre measuring containers<br />
• Hessian drag<br />
• 105 litre drums open both ends with lifting handles (Workshop drawing LIC 010) for<br />
spotting aggregate (Photo 4.27)<br />
• 105 litre drums for checking spray rates and cleaning spray equipment<br />
• Drum lifter for lifting full drums of binder (Workshop drawing LIC 008)<br />
• Manually operated chip spreader (Photo 4.28) (Optional)<br />
