Ostwald, Wilhelm (1853–1932) German chemist. Born in Riga, studied chemistry in <strong>the</strong> University of<br />

Tartu. In 1909 he was awarded <strong>the</strong> Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on catalysis, chemical<br />

equilibria <strong>and</strong> reaction velocities. In <strong>the</strong> field of philosophy, he developed his own <strong>the</strong>ory of energetics.<br />

Preobraženskij, Antonin Viktorovič (1870–1929) musicologist. Since 1898 he worked at <strong>the</strong><br />

Moscow Synodal School <strong>and</strong> since 1902 in St. Petersburg in a choir (“Kapella”). He was a professor at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Leningrad Institute of Art History <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> Leningrad’s Conservatory. He was interested in ancient<br />

Russian song <strong>and</strong> church music.<br />

Prokof’ev, Sergej (1891–1953) <strong>Soviet</strong> composer. In his early years, he was close to <strong>the</strong> avantgardism,<br />

but later his works included a variety of styles <strong>and</strong> elements.<br />

Saussure, Ferdin<strong>and</strong> de (1875–1913) Swiss philologist <strong>and</strong> a linguist. He has been regarded as <strong>the</strong><br />

founder of modern linguistics, since he tends to describe <strong>the</strong> exact structure of language. He started <strong>the</strong><br />

structuralist tradition in linguistics, <strong>and</strong> some see early elements of semiotics in his works.<br />

Schopenhauer, Arthur (1788–1850) German philosopher.He developed his gnoseology on <strong>the</strong> basis<br />

of Kantian transcendental philosophy. The main work consisted of gnoseology, metaphysics or<br />

philosophy of nature, aes<strong>the</strong>tics <strong>and</strong> ethics.<br />

Schumann Robert (1810–1856) German composer. One of <strong>the</strong> most famous Romantic composers of<br />

<strong>the</strong> first half of <strong>the</strong> 19th century. An intellectual as well as an aes<strong>the</strong>te, his music, more than any o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

composer, reflects <strong>the</strong> deep personal nature of Romanticism<br />

Schönberg, Arnold (1874–1951) Austrian composer. His twelve tone serial technique was a<br />

distinguishing feature of 20th century music <strong>and</strong> today is reagarded as a modern classic. He was a 1926<br />

professor of composition at <strong>the</strong> academy of music in Berlin. He emigrated to <strong>the</strong> US via france in 1933<br />

<strong>and</strong> taught at <strong>the</strong> University of California.<br />

Serov, Aleks<strong>and</strong>r (1820–1871) famous Russian art critic of <strong>the</strong> 19th century.<br />
