Thk tombs discovered were uU, with one possible<br />

exception, of the Xlth Dynasty, and tlierefore<br />

contemporary with the <strong>temple</strong>.<br />

One only (No. 13) is probably of earlier<br />

d<strong>at</strong>e, and <strong>at</strong> any r<strong>at</strong>e was made before the<br />

buildinsr of the <strong>temple</strong>.<br />

No. 1. Northern Court; <strong>at</strong> east end. A<br />

simple rectanp;ular grave {sength, !) ft. 9 in. ; widtli, .'> ft. : depth,<br />

and witii pointed bases ; live fragments of<br />

similar pots ; the base of a vase of finer -ware<br />

the base of a jjottery vase-stand ; a wooden<br />

mod<strong>el</strong> vase; one conical vase-sealing of clay;<br />

the top of a Avoodcn lily-pillar from the cabin of<br />

a mod<strong>el</strong> bo<strong>at</strong> (PL x. ; Brit. Mus.) ; and tw^o<br />

nuts. It is possible th<strong>at</strong> this is an unfinished<br />

shaft like No. (i, and th<strong>at</strong> it was used as a grave<br />

in l<strong>at</strong>er times; the Xlth Dynasty objects found<br />

ill it will then be r<strong>el</strong>ics of the viol<strong>at</strong>ion of other<br />

neighbouring tombs, shov<strong>el</strong>led in with other<br />

rubbish to cover the l<strong>at</strong>er burial.<br />

No. 2. Northern Court ; <strong>at</strong> west end, close<br />

to the Avail (Plan and Section : I'l. xi.). A<br />

single rectangular chamber with a rectan-<br />

gular pit of unequal dcpfli. Length of pit,<br />

I'J ft.; width, (i ft. 1 in.; depth <strong>at</strong> further<br />

end, above the door of tlir chaiiibc)-. 1 1 ft., <strong>at</strong><br />

hither end 8 [t. fi in. <strong>The</strong> slope <strong>at</strong> the bottom<br />

is roughly hewn into steps. Door, h ft. high,<br />

4 ft. 1 in. wide ; set tow^ard the south side of<br />

the pit, not in the middle. Brick sealing-wall<br />

to door, broken down on south side : height,<br />

:5ft. 5 in.; length, 3 ft. 10 in.: width 2 ft.<br />

11 in. J.aid on a loAv brick threshold.<br />

Dynasty, blue beads and other objects, includ-<br />

ing scarabs. In chamber: the jierfect skull of<br />

the original owner, a man ; a thin horn bangle<br />

(PI. X.; Brit. Mus.), 2 in. in diameter; frag-<br />

ments of the wooden coffin, of the rectangular box<br />

type, painted white and uninscribed ;<br />

of the mod<strong>el</strong> bo<strong>at</strong>s, including masts, oars, and a<br />

notched rest or crutch for the yard, painted Avith<br />

black and red spots on white; five men of the<br />

crew, three standing, two se<strong>at</strong>ed ; two Avooden<br />

stands and one of Avhite limestone (Brit. Mus.)<br />

on Avhich the bo<strong>at</strong> Avas placed (?)—these are<br />

circular in section and in the shape of trunc<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

cones,—two mod<strong>el</strong> vases, and other fragments.<br />

Nos. 3-6. On the Temple- Pl<strong>at</strong>form. Placed<br />

in a roAV <strong>at</strong> approxim<strong>at</strong><strong>el</strong>y equal distances from<br />

each other bene<strong>at</strong>h the floor of the outer upper<br />

colonnade (the pillars of Avhich liaA'e disappeared)<br />

facing north. <strong>The</strong>y lie north and south. All<br />

are chamber tombs of the same type as No. 2 ;<br />

No. G was never completed.
