This appendix <strong>in</strong>clu<strong>de</strong>s the questionnaire given to <strong>English</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Catalan</strong> speakers, to<br />

whom a k<strong>in</strong>d of <strong>in</strong>troduction was given.<br />

Questionnaire for <strong>English</strong> speakers<br />

Speakers of any language are creative <strong>and</strong> can form new words every day without<br />

notic<strong>in</strong>g. In the follow<strong>in</strong>g sentences, there are two possible verbs, most of which you<br />

won’t probably have heard or used before. But, if you had to use one, which one would<br />

you choose? Which one sounds better? Please circle or un<strong>de</strong>rl<strong>in</strong>e the verb you choose.<br />

1. John drove home from work. When he arrived home he garaged / engaraged<br />

the car, because he didn’t need it until the follow<strong>in</strong>g day.<br />

2. The villagers didn’t have a boat to cross the river <strong>and</strong> they nee<strong>de</strong>d one<br />

<strong>de</strong>sperately. So they <strong>de</strong>ci<strong>de</strong>d to enraft / raft some logs together.<br />

3. Nancy emperfumed / perfumed the girl before leav<strong>in</strong>g home.<br />

4. He jammed / enjammed his toast for breakfast.<br />

5. Hundreds of spots have enuglied / uglied the teenager’s face.<br />

6. The dressmaker had to create an orig<strong>in</strong>al piece of work for a contest, <strong>and</strong> she<br />

<strong>de</strong>ci<strong>de</strong>d that she would enleaf / leaf the jumper she had just f<strong>in</strong>ished.<br />

7. She had embeautied / beautied s<strong>in</strong>ce she had put on some weight.<br />

8. Her sister jugged / enjugged the water, as her father had told her.<br />

9. The k<strong>in</strong>g poored / empoored the servant by tak<strong>in</strong>g away all his possessions.<br />

10. Julie was bored, so she <strong>de</strong>ci<strong>de</strong>d to pencil / empencil the schoolbag<br />

11. The boyfriend bouqueted / embouqueted the flowers for his girlfriend.<br />

12. She kept all the poems he had written to her. In fact, she had booked /<br />

embooked all of them.<br />

photo frame.<br />

14. He endrawered / drawered the jumper. The weather was warm <strong>and</strong> he <strong>de</strong>ci<strong>de</strong>d<br />

he wouldn’t take it.<br />

15. Little John was play<strong>in</strong>g with shells on the beach. After a while, he embucketted<br />

/ bucketted them. He wanted to take them home to show them to his gr<strong>and</strong>ma.<br />
