Queensland Life Sciences Industry Report 2012 04 IMPORTANT NOTICE Statistical Limitations on Estimates Presented in this Report Figures contained in this report are either for the 2010/2011 financial year or 2011 calendar year, given that Australian universities typically report on a calendar year and companies typically report on a financial year. Survey Data and Secondary Sources The information presented was collected from a primary survey of the Queensland Life Sciences (QLS) Industry (see Appendices at 14.1.2 for the industry definition) undertaken in March and April 2012, and various secondary data sources as referenced throughout this report. The survey was conducted using an online survey platform (for details see Appendices at 14.1.4). For the purpose of this survey, it was assumed that the QLS Industry comprised 301 organisations in 2011 as listed in the database held by DSITIA. This database includes 252 public and private companies (referred to as ’companies’) and 49 university institutes, faculties, schools, research centres or independent research organisations with a Life Sciences focus (referred to as ‘research organisations’). The database comprised 133 organisations deemed to fall into the ‘Biotechnology’ sector, and 168 in the ‘Therapeutic Medicines and Devices’ (TMD) sector. This classification was necessary in order to draw some comparisons with separate surveys undertaken in 2007 for each of these sectors. The current survey was completed by 139 organisations (46% of those within the DSITIA database), including 111 companies and 28 research organisations. 49% of respondents were Biotechnology organisations and 51% were TMD organisations. All financial figures in this report are presented in Australian dollars (AU$). Where figures derived from secondary data were converted to AU$ from another currency, the conversion rates presented in the Appendices were applied. Throughout the report, figures presented in the text, tables and graphics may appear inconsistent due to rounding. Statistical Limitations on Estimates presented in this Report This survey presents data from a ‘sample population’ of 139 (46%) of the 301 organisations in the DSITIA database. The industry includes a range of organisations: from major research institutions to smaller research centres, and publicly-listed companies to start-up companies. Participation in the survey was voluntary, and as a result the sample is subject to self-selection bias and may not be representative of the total population. The data gathered from this population can vary significantly and as such we considered measures in strata that pooled more homogenous populations. The distribution of values within the total dataset did not, in many cases, represent a normal distribution. This is particularly true for measures including income, expenditure and employment, where reported figures ranged from hundreds of employees and tens of millions of dollars in income or expenditure for large research institutions, down to a single employee and minimal income for a start-up company. In cases such as these, the median was deemed to be more representative of the sample population than the average.
Strata were defined by industry (TMD or Biotechnology) and organisational size, which was based on employee numbers (small, medium, and large). Strata were defined for both responders and non-responders, where possible. Within each stratum the arithmetic mean in most cases provided a reasonable measure of the central tendency. Data from the 2011 survey was compared to the 2009 survey. Where respondents had participated in both surveys, the median secular trend (measured as the ratio of the 2011 value to 2009 value) was assessed for each measures of interest. Several organisations had responded to the 2009 survey but not the 2011 survey. In estimating the total population, it was reasoned that the 2009 data was likely to better inform our estimates of 2011 than using the mean from other respondents. The secular trend value was applied to those organisations’ values in 2009 to derive 2011 estimates. The total population estimates were derived from bootstrapped estimates of the mean with each stratum. The variance of the final estimate was derived from the variance of the bootstrapped mean in each stratum. Where relevant, the data are presented with 95% confidence intervals. Given the population estimates are not necessarily derived from a representative sample they should be considered speculative and taken only as a guide to the state of the industry, relative to the reported figures from previous comparable surveys. In the QLS Industry survey 2009 and the 2007 Queensland Biotechnology Industry and Queensland TMD Industry surveys, a similar estimation method was employed. Where possible the approach used to calculate population totals are consistent with those used in previous surveys. In some cases, 2007 survey results were reanalysed using the methodology applied to the 2009 and 2011 survey results. There are variations between the 2011, 2009 and 2007 surveys in terms of the specific organisations that responded to the survey in each year. Thus, the sample population is different for each survey. In addition, income data for the TMD analysis in 2007 was collected as an income range and not a specific figure as was the case in subsequent surveys. Direct comparisons between figures from different surveys may indicate change but any such changes cannot be taken as definitive.
