Born in 1968 in Baneh in the Kurdish part of Iran, he fi rst worked in radio before taking up
studies at Teheran Film School in 1992 and making numerous short fi lms. One of these
short fi lms, “Life in Fog” (1999) is even considered as the most famous short ever made in
Iran. His fi rst feature-length drama, Zamani baraye masti asbha, was awarded the “Caméra
d’Or”when it was shown at the Cannes fi lm festival. This fi lm and all the others made by
Ghobadi were hits in the festival circuit, garnered dozens of awards but were little seen or
not seen at all in his native country.
