Brodetsky was a mathematician and Zionist leader. Born
in the Ukraine, he moved with his family to London in
1893. He placed first (for all England) in the Cambridge
local examinations in 1905 and won a scholarship to
Trinity College. He obtained a Ph.D. in astronomy
from Leipzig and, in 1914, became a lecturer at Bristol
University, becoming chair of mathematics in Leeds in
1924. In 1949, he moved to Israel, where he became
president of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
