A committee of the Royal Society decides who will be
awarded various medals in any given year. At one of the
medal ceremonies, Babbage observed that the Scheutz
Difference Engine had been in the Royal Society rooms
for many months, and he was distressed that, perhaps
through his own oversight, the Scheutz team had not been
nominated for one of the medals. He briefly summarizes
the history of the Scheutz team and their Difference
Engine and concludes by hoping that the committee
would keep them in mind in future years. Babbage goes
on to make it quite plain that he was not questioning the
competency of those who were awarded the medals.
