16 Theotokos Twenty Italian and twenty Cypriot masterpieces representing the Virgin Mary were on display at the Hellenic Bank Head Office in Nicosia between 1 and 31 July, 2005. The exhibition entitled Theotokos – Madonna was held under the auspices of the Italian Embassy and was organised in collaboration with the Pierides Foundation. It came within the framework of the bilateral cultural programme between Cyprus and Italy. This rare exhibition was the brainchild of the Italian Ambassador, Gherardo La Francesca and Dr. Andreas Pittas. The idea sparked off during a conversation they had about Mouriki’ s "Maniera Cypria" and the Cypriot icons dating from the 13th century that still exist around Italy such as the Madonna della Madia at Monopoli in Apoulia, the Madonna della Fonte at Trani or the truly wonderful Cypriot icon of Virgin Mary the Conductress at St. Nile in Grottaferrata. The exhibition was meant to draw a link between Italian and Greek iconographers and their depiction of the Madonna (Theotokos) and child. Between the 12th and 13th centuries renowned and anonymous Cypriot artists, under the influence of European Pre-Renaissance Arts, developed a new painting style called "Maniera Cypria" (Cypriot manner) which tended to smoothen the stiff and austere stylised Byzantine iconography by grafting Gothic elements of Italian or French origins. The "bridge" between East and West and the pivotal role that Virgin Mary held in the art and tradition of both the Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Church were evident more than 800 years ago.
