SOMATOPIA
An exhibition of Cypriot contemporary art entitled:
Somatopia: Mapping Sites, Siting Bodies was hosted
at the Hellenic Centre in London between the
28 September and 21 October 2005.
The exhibition, organised by the Cultural
Services of the Ministry of Education
and Culture in collaboration with the London
Hellenic Centre and curated by Dr
Antonis Danos, art historian, was opened
by Henry Meyric Hughes, President of the
International Association of Art Critics
(AICA) in Paris and President of the International
Foundation Manifesta (IMF) in
Amsterdam.
The Minister of Education and Culture,
Pefkios Georgiades, pointed out in the catalogue
to the exhibition that this event
marks a new approach in the way Cypriot
contemporary artistic production is promoted
beyond our geographical borders.
It is the first time that Cyprus attempts
to introduce representative samples of its
contemporary cultural profile – including
many concerns and preoccupations that
run through it – by means of a group such
as this.
