28 In a ceremony held on 24 November, 2005 at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre, the Minister of Education and Culture, Mr. Pefkios Georgiades, presented the Awards for Excellence, the state’s highest honour to: director Evis Gavrielides, academic Chrysostomos Nikias, bibliographer Nicos Panayiotou, educationalist Panayiotis Persieanis, artist Stass Paraskos and surgeon Nicos Spanos. Presenting the Awards, the Minister expressed his appreciation and admiration for the recipients who, each one in his own sector has offered invaluable services with self-sacrifice and zeal for the benefit of science, art and literature. "Their work, the fruit of many years of toil, dedication and self-denial has become Awards for Excellence Award winners (from left to right): Nicos Spanos, Chrysostomos Nikias, Stass Paraskos, Evis Gavrielides, Panayiotis Persianis and Nicos Panayiotou. part of our heritage", he added. The Minister also underlined the fact that the state understood the difficulties faced by artists and scientists in Cyprus and at the same time feels proud that some of the honoured ones have managed to break out beyond the borders of small Cyprus and gain recognition overseas. The awards ceremony also included short film presentations of the winners’ lives and work, directed by Adonis Florides. Evis Gavrielides Evis Gavrielides is one of the most outstanding contributors to the development of Cypriot theatre. Endowed with a genuine talent and a high sense of professionalism, he has devoted his whole life to the art of the theatre leaving his indelible personal seal on every work he has directed. Born in Paphos where his father was a teacher at the local gymnasium, Gavrielides later moved with his family to Nicosia. He then studied drama at Karolos Koun School in Athens, where he also worked in several theatres and repertory companies that took him to different countries as far as Sudan. He proceeded with his theatre studies in London where he studied Theatre Direction at the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama before continuing his studies at the Actors Studio in the US. There, he also obtained his Diploma in Television Drama Direction. He finally moved to the Goodman College in Chicago where he obtained a BA and MA in Theatre Direction. In 1958, he returned to Greece to continue acting and directing. One year later he started his collaboration with the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation and in 1961 with the recently founded Theatre Development Organisation. In 1966, he realised his ambition to return to Cyprus where he set up the Cyprus Drama School in Nicosia and at the same time he was in charge of the CyBC theatre productions. It was during this period that he converted a car workshop in the courtyard of CyBC into a Theatre where, for two years he presented classical and avant-garde plays in most memorable productions.
