It also publishes a valuable regular section on careers in its monthly magazine for
172 SUCCESSFUL STUDYING members, The Psychologist.The Divisions, Sections and Special Groups of the BPS are obvious sources of focused information and can be accessed through the main website, but for an introduction see the website associated with this book. If you take out student membership of the BPS this will give you access to its quarterly magazine, Psych-Talk (www.bps.org.uk/smg), which covers the kinds of issues that will be concerning you. It could also be helpful to look at the graduate prospects website (www.prospects.ac.uk), and the Higher Education <strong>Psychology</strong> network (www.psychology.heacademy.ac.uk) is collecting case studies of careers from psychology graduates. 6.5 Postgraduate courses These usually assume applicants will have GBR status, whatever route has been taken to acquire it, although it may not be compulsory for some academic or more general interest courses. Accredited professional training in psychology GBR will be compulsory for any course accredited by the BPS or the HPC for professional training. If an applied postgraduate course does not appear to require it, check carefully that it is recognized in the field and does nevertheless lead to job opportunities. The standard pattern leading to BPS Chartered Psychologist status is described above (page 169). Currently the areas in which there is accredited postgraduate training leading to Chartered status are: clinical, counselling, educational, forensic, health, occupational, sport and exercise, and teaching and research. These areas of psychology have carefully mapped, detailed progression routes leading to Chartered status and you should read the specialist sections on our website. Although it is very likely that graduates wishing to continue their career in an area of psychology will need to take a further relevant qualification, this could be straight after graduating, after some relevant practical experience, or sometimes in mid-career as continuing professional development. If it is possible, it will probably pay you in the long run to take the route through formal qualifications even if you manage initially to obtain a post without them. The world in general is moving towards a culture that relies on formal qualifications, and you do not want to be caught out some years hence because you have not got the right piece of paper!
