The value of your skills
Many employers are very vague about psychology and have a foggy concept of
something that lies somewhere between astrology and psychiatry, so you will
need to be very clear about the transferable skills you have acquired from your
psychology degree. Use the QAA benchmarking statement (see Figure 2.11) to
set out your stall illustrating what you can offer, and populate it from your
PDP material. Applicants are usually very anxious to describe what they have
done in an application, but not always so good at expressing it in terms of the job
description from the employer. It pays to look very carefully at this and try to
view your life so far in terms of their criteria. It is amazing how things you had not
really seen the relevance of can come into focus.

There is a great deal of emphasis, following the Lambert Review in 2003
(www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/consultations_and_legislation/lambert/consult_
lambert_index.cfm), on supporting the development of academic staff and
students as entrepreneurs, and encouraging them to set up small businesses with
various forms of training and support. There will be staff in the university with
the specific remit to assist student entrepreneurs, and if you are considering this
you should certainly go and talk to them about the possibilities. Most universities
have science parks or business parks that provide a hothouse environment for
such developments. Funding in the early stages is likely to be a real issue (watch
Dragons’ Den (www.bbc.co.uk/dragonsden) for an illustration of some of the
pitfalls), so you will not be surprised if we urge caution.
