USING IT 77 • How far from the university will you be living? • Will you be living somewhere that is networked? (Purpose-built student accommodation will usually be networked nowadays.) • And, of course, how much can you afford? If you do decide to set yourself up with independent IT – and, in our experience, nearly everyone does – what should you buy? This is getting into a more technical level of advice and things go out of date very quickly, but here are some guidelines. • Much as we admire Apple, universities have universally adopted PCs as their standard general-purpose machines. So if you want to be compatible with these, you should adopt one too. (You may still get a chance to use Apple Macs for running experiments in the department.) • If you are living away from home buy a laptop, but get a reasonably large and high-quality screen. You will be spending long hours in front of it, perhaps working on spreadsheets of numbers, and eyes do get tired. • If you find the laptop pad annoying, you could buy a mouse to plug into it. • If you find the keyboard on your laptop fiddly – although people do seem to get used to even the smallest – buy a cheap keyboard to plug into the USB socket. • It must have networking and Wi-Fi facilities. They all do nowadays, but if you are buying a second-hand one, check. • The latest operating system and software is nice to have, but not essential. Universities are like oil tankers – slow to change course – so you may find that it takes them a year or two to change to the most recent version of Microsoft Windows. • It might be worth checking with your university whether it has any financial support or negotiated deals with suppliers to help with the purchase of laptops – not so likely now that prices have dropped so much, but it is always worth asking. • Our advice would be to buy the equipment before you arrive at university so that you are familiar with it before you start, and are in a position to ask for and take advice on setting it up. • Microsoft Office, or some other compatible office suite, and a web browser, such as Microsoft’s Internet Explorer or Firefox from mozilla.com, are all you will need to begin with. Other software, like SPSS, may become useful later, but you can always add it when you need it. • You will need a USB memory stick with a reasonable capacity for moving files from your laptop to university machines. • A reliable printer is a bonus. You can always print in the university, though this will not normally be free.
78 STUDY SKILLS FOR PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS Tips: Setting up your own computer ➢ If you have not done so already, install Google Desktop. This searches the files on your computer in the same way as Google searches the web – invaluable if you cannot find something. To do this: do a Google search for ‘google desktop’ click Google Desktop and download (it offers you some other add-on widgets, which are probably less useful). ➢ If you have any problems in setting up your computer and are not very IT literate yourself, do not worry, there will be plenty of people around at university who will enjoy showing you what you are doing wrong. Do not be afraid to ask: it is a good way of making friends. Accessing resources from outside and using your own laptop If you have your own computing equipment it is very important to get it networked if you possibly can. If this is not possible, then you can probably take your laptop into the university and use Wi-Fi to link to the network. If even this is not possible, then you can still use your computer for preparing work but you will
