76 STUDY SKILLS FOR PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS
electronic textbooks are available for psychology, but this is a fast-moving area
and most university libraries are rapidly expanding their stock. Our prediction is
that by the time the second edition of this book is published, they will have
become a much more dominant medium.
Tip: Using ‘Favourites’
➢ Put the sites you use most often in your ‘Favourites’ folder, and the ones
you use very often in the ‘Links’ folder of ‘Favourites’ so that they appear
on the tool bar across the top of your web pages. What you put here
depends on your particular style of working, but here are some of the most
popular options that often appear on psychology students’ tool bars:
What should you buy?
your internet bank account (if you have one)
All the resources we have been describing so far will be available to you via the
university’s computers. Much of the teaching on using these resources will be
done on them and it is essential that you familiarize yourself with how they are
set up. There will be staff available to advise you how to use them and at least
some of them should be available 24 hours a day, so it is perfectly possible to rely
on university resources and flourish, especially if you live near the university and
do not mind getting up early to find a good place to work. There will also be long
periods between lectures when it may be much more convenient to go in and
work on a machine in the library or learning resource centre than lug your own
laptop around, and, most importantly, the university’s back-up system will be
totally safe from fire, theft and spilt coffee.
Nevertheless, there is no doubt that having your own IT equipment means
you will, while it is working at least, be in control of your own life, and this is
something that most of us find attractive. As with deciding what textbooks to buy
(page 36), in the end this is a decision you will have to make for yourself. You will
have to take into account the following questions.
• How have you been used to working and how do you see yourself working in
the future?
• Do you find working in a communal environment motivating or distracting?
