only nine universities, sometimes associated with joint degrees involving ICT
The ‘Prospects’ website (see www.work-experience.org) asked people who work in
the field for a definition of quality work experience, and the following list is what
they came up with:
• the student is trained by the higher education institution (HEI) to identify
potential learning outcomes
• objectives are set (by HEI, employer and student)
• supervision is by a supervisor trained in the objectives and learning outcomes
of work experience – academic supervision and visits take place
• regular feedback is given
• an appraisal is given during the work experience and at the end
• where appropriate, a project is undertaken
• learning and achievements are articulated by the student in written form
• an assessment is made, including an assessment of the skills developed (by HEI,
employer and student)
• recognition – credit or a certificate is awarded.
• Vacation work: the summer is a good time to find this, often filling in while
other staff take family holidays. A temping agency might take you on as a
regular for vacation work.
• Internship: a term increasingly used by large companies, referring to a placement,
• Shell Step: vacation work experience for full-time second-year undergraduate
students only, where they undertake a specific project within a small to
