are quite rare in psychology courses and, at the time of writing, are offered by<br />

only nine universities, sometimes associated with joint degrees involving ICT<br />

or human resource management.<br />

The ‘Prospects’ website (see www.work-experience.org) asked people who work in<br />

the field for a definition of quality work experience, and the following list is what<br />

they came up with:<br />

• the student is trained by the higher education institution (HEI) to identify<br />

potential learning outcomes<br />

• objectives are set (by HEI, employer and student)<br />

• supervision is by a supervisor trained in the objectives and learning outcomes<br />

of work experience – academic supervision and visits take place<br />

• regular feedback is given<br />

• an appraisal is given during the work experience and at the end<br />

• where appropriate, a project is undertaken<br />

• learning and achievements are articulated by the student in written form<br />

• an assessment is made, including an assessment of the skills developed (by HEI,<br />

employer and student)<br />

• recognition – credit or a certificate is awarded.<br />

(Check with <strong>your</strong> university careers service whether there is a local specialist<br />

agency to help with this. In Liverpool, a universities-based agency called Business<br />

Bridge negotiates with regional employers to find part-time and temporary<br />

work that is relevant to the student’s degree subject; this project is so successful<br />

that many students take up full-time employment with them when they<br />

graduate.)<br />

• Part-time work: during term-time, but be realistic about the amount of time and<br />

energy you will need for <strong>your</strong> course, and leave some time to relax.<br />

• Vacation work: the summer is a good time to find this, often filling in while<br />

other staff take family holidays. A temping agency might take you on as a<br />

regular for vacation work.<br />

• Internship: a term increasingly used by large companies, referring to a placement,<br />

usually during the summer vacation.<br />

• Shell Step: vacation work experience for full-time second-year undergraduate<br />

students only, where they undertake a specific project within a small to<br />

medium-sized business during an eight-week placement in the summer<br />

vacation (see www.shellstep.org.uk). They are paid a weekly training allowance,<br />

which is exempt from tax and national insurance. Shell Step offers
