Table I, following, lists the more common pre­
historic and modern fauna found on the Monument. The data
are from Tables in an unpublished Masters thesis, Depart­
ment of Zoology, University of Arizona. The number of
prehistoric animals listed indicates the absolute minimum
total individuals -which Lincoln could identify.
In addition to the data in Table I, it should be
noted that fish are not now found on the Monument, with
the exception of one minnow variety Cyprlnldae. However,
several vertlbrae of a bony-tail were found in excavated
material and some portions of Astyanax mexlcanus (Qstar-
lophys) as well as some catfish, carp, and minnow remains,
these mostly in Room 60b, Venomous snakes are uncommon,
although an occasional rattlesnake has been noticed; non-
venomous varieties are fairly common, however. The western
spadefoot and great basin short-horned and desert toads are
found, as well as the western earless, collared, and desert
scaly lizards. More than 80 passerine species of birds
are recorded on the Monument, and several species of
raptorian birds, including the western turkey vulture,
sharp-shinned, cooper's, and eastern goshawks, the western
red-tailed hawk,the prairie, western, and Richardson pigeon
hawks, the desert sparrow hawk, the golden eagle, and several
varieties of owls (King 19^9' 11)• Bones of the red-tailed
hawk, osprey, and turkey were found among the bone artifacts
