of Hohokam influence. The Sinagua, in turn, probably intro­
duced the trait to the Hopl. Painted and clay-ooated baskets
are mainly limited to Hohokam, Chaco, Sinagua, and late Salado
sites* The trait may be of Hohokam (ultimately Mesoamerican)
origin in the Chaco, from which it spread to the Sinagua# The
twilled matting and ring baskets of Wupatkl are typical of
northern Pueblo sites, except for the example of Pima style
double-selvage, which suggests Hohokam Influence. In short,
the main basketry types are western or central Pueblo in origin,
with the addition of several Hohokam traits.
The sandal.collection is of different origin, however.
It is not a typical Anasazl assemblage? as a whole, it appears
to be basically Mogollon. The rough weave and width of the
weaving elements, as well as the lack of cotton sandals, sug­
gests a Mogollon pattern, and the lack of the typical .Anasazi
jog-toe style also supports this conclusion. The wickerwork
sandals are Mogollon types, as are the four-concentric-warp,
and scuffer-toe sandals. However, one sandal, the sewn coil
specimen with false braid, is a Hohokam type, limited to that
area alone. In short, there is a Mogollon sandal assemblage
at Wupatkl, with one clear post-eruptive Hohokam item.
The cordage and knots are typical of widespread pre­
historic Southwestern types, and the netting, twined bag, twined
skirt, fur and feather robes, needles, and pot rests, are pro­
bably also representative of common traits. However, feather
robes were popular in the northern Pueblo area by 1100, while
