It became clear, through the analysis of the data, that there were significant differences<br />

<strong>in</strong> the levels of dysfunctional beliefs about sleep <strong>and</strong> stress between people with FMS<br />

<strong>and</strong> healthy controls, suggest<strong>in</strong>g that these psychological factors may have a role <strong>in</strong> the<br />

FMS experience <strong>and</strong> symptom severity. However, this study may not have accounted<br />

for all possible <strong>in</strong>fluential factors on these relationships. For example, previous research<br />

has found that social support is a protective factor of the effects of stress <strong>and</strong> this study<br />

was limited as it did not control for the effects of social support on the relationships<br />

explored.<br />

Although dysfunctional beliefs about sleep need, overall levels of stress <strong>and</strong> distress<br />

were significantly associated with health outcomes such as pa<strong>in</strong>, fatigue <strong>and</strong><br />

components of sleep quality, the relationship between these psychological factors may<br />

have been affected by the more str<strong>in</strong>gent significance level utilised to reduce the risk of<br />
