little <strong>in</strong>formation was available as to the underly<strong>in</strong>g cause of the condition, let alone<br />

the types of sleep difficulties people perceived they were experienc<strong>in</strong>g. Over the<br />

duration of this thesis, there have been significant advances <strong>in</strong> our underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of<br />

the condition, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a movement towards FMS be<strong>in</strong>g considered as a neurological,<br />

rather than a rheumatological condition. Consequently, it was important to ensure that<br />

the most current literature was used to <strong>in</strong>form the <strong>in</strong>terpretation of the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

Literature available up until March 2010 has, therefore, been <strong>in</strong>cluded with<strong>in</strong> this<br />

thesis where most appropriate to make sense of the field <strong>and</strong> the research. The overall<br />

thesis has been structured <strong>in</strong>to eight chapters follow<strong>in</strong>g the development of the work<br />

completed:<br />

Chapter One explores the literature on FMS, its impact on both <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>and</strong><br />

society <strong>and</strong> current treatment approaches.<br />

In Chapter Two, the current knowledge base on sleep <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>somnia, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

factors affect<strong>in</strong>g sleep quality <strong>in</strong> the general population are discussed.<br />

Chapter Three <strong>in</strong>tegrates <strong>and</strong> extends the <strong>in</strong>formation with<strong>in</strong> the first two<br />

chapters by review<strong>in</strong>g the literature specifically focus<strong>in</strong>g on sleep <strong>in</strong> FMS.<br />

In response to the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs of the literature review outl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the first three<br />

chapters, Chapter Four aims to address some of the gaps identified <strong>in</strong> the current<br />

literature by explor<strong>in</strong>g the l<strong>in</strong>ks between sleep quality, cop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> other<br />

symptoms of FMS such as pa<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> fatigue.<br />

Chapter Five extends the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs of the study described <strong>in</strong> Chapter Four by<br />

exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the psychological factors that may <strong>in</strong>fluence sleep quality <strong>in</strong> FMS, by<br />

compar<strong>in</strong>g people with FMS with healthy controls.<br />

Us<strong>in</strong>g a qualitative approach to elaborate on the quantitative f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs of the<br />

studies <strong>in</strong> Chapters Four <strong>and</strong> Five, Chapter Six exam<strong>in</strong>es people‟s experiences<br />

of sleep, the role of sleep on quality of sleep <strong>and</strong> the mean<strong>in</strong>g of poor sleep<br />

quality for people with FMS. This chapter aims to explore the needs of patients<br />

with FMS, to identify the key areas that would need to be addressed <strong>in</strong> a<br />

proposed <strong>in</strong>tervention to improve sleep quality.<br />

Chapter Seven pilots an <strong>in</strong>tervention to improve sleep quality for people with<br />

FMS based on the results of the previous studies with<strong>in</strong> this thesis.<br />

The discussion <strong>in</strong> Chapter Eight comb<strong>in</strong>es evidence from the exist<strong>in</strong>g literature<br />

with the research conducted with<strong>in</strong> this thesis. Implications of the research<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs for cl<strong>in</strong>ical practice <strong>and</strong> future research are proposed.<br />
