What are the side effects of any treatment received or possible risks when tak<strong>in</strong>g part?<br />
You may f<strong>in</strong>d that you become upset talk<strong>in</strong>g about your experiences. You will be able to<br />
contact a member of the research team at any time dur<strong>in</strong>g the study if you are at all<br />
concerned. The researcher will be a Chartered Health Psychologist.<br />
What are the possible benefits of tak<strong>in</strong>g part?<br />
Some people f<strong>in</strong>d talk<strong>in</strong>g about their condition to others helpful <strong>and</strong> talk<strong>in</strong>g about your<br />
experiences may help you to underst<strong>and</strong> your condition better. The <strong>in</strong>formation we get from<br />
this study may help us to treat future patients with Fibromyalgia better.<br />
What happens when the research study stops?<br />
You will be able to contact a researcher at any po<strong>in</strong>t dur<strong>in</strong>g the research study. You will be<br />
sent a summary of the study f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs for your <strong>in</strong>terest, unless you ask us not to receive this.<br />
Will my tak<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>in</strong> this study be kept confidential?<br />
All <strong>in</strong>formation which is collected about you dur<strong>in</strong>g the course of the research will be kept<br />
strictly confidential. Your name <strong>and</strong> contact details will be kept <strong>in</strong> a locked fil<strong>in</strong>g cab<strong>in</strong>et.<br />
Information will only be disclosed if it <strong>in</strong>dicates a serious threat to either yourself or others.<br />
Any <strong>in</strong>formation about you which leaves the university will have your name <strong>and</strong> address<br />
removed so that you cannot be recognised from it.<br />
The <strong>in</strong>terview tape will not have your name on it. It will be coded with a research<br />
identification number <strong>and</strong> so you will be anonymous to the secretary who will transcribe the<br />
taped <strong>in</strong>terview. The taped <strong>in</strong>terviews will be kept <strong>in</strong> a locked fil<strong>in</strong>g cab<strong>in</strong>et separate from<br />
your contact details <strong>and</strong> will be destroyed at the end of the study. Two researchers will read<br />
<strong>and</strong> analyse the typed transcripts for common themes.<br />
Your GP will be <strong>in</strong>formed of your participation <strong>in</strong> this study only with your permission.<br />
Any other <strong>in</strong>formation about you that leaves the university will have your name <strong>and</strong> address<br />
removed so you cannot be recognised from it.<br />
What will happen to the results of the research study?<br />
The results of the research will be presented at medical <strong>and</strong> psychology conferences <strong>and</strong><br />
will be published <strong>in</strong> a research journal. You will not be identified <strong>in</strong> any report or<br />
publication.<br />
Who has reviewed the study?<br />
This study was given a favourable ethical op<strong>in</strong>ion from the University of Surrey Ethics<br />
Committee.<br />
Compla<strong>in</strong>ts<br />
Any compla<strong>in</strong>t or concerns about any aspects of the way you have been dealt with dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
