The data was analysed <strong>and</strong> coded by two researchers, <strong>in</strong>dependently us<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

recommended IPA approach (Smith, 2003).<br />

The <strong>in</strong>terview transcripts were read several times to <strong>in</strong>crease familiarity with the data<br />

<strong>and</strong> a layered analysis approach was used. All transcripts were typed <strong>in</strong>to a table format<br />

with an empty column to the left <strong>and</strong> right of the transcript. Initial comments <strong>and</strong><br />

prelim<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>terpretations of the data were noted <strong>in</strong> the right h<strong>and</strong> columns with key<br />

words <strong>and</strong> phrases highlighted with<strong>in</strong> the transcript itself. These <strong>in</strong>itial comments <strong>and</strong><br />

prelim<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>terpretations were then used as a basis for analysis of subsequent<br />
