Another participant added:<br />

“I can sleep, I can go off to sleep but if I don‟t take anyth<strong>in</strong>g (referr<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

medication) I do lie awake, just lie awake or I get woken up this constant<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g woken up is the worse th<strong>in</strong>g.‟‟ [006 F61]<br />

Participants described that when they woke up dur<strong>in</strong>g the night, they would wake-up<br />

suddenly, feel<strong>in</strong>g very alert, <strong>and</strong> this made it difficult to try <strong>and</strong> go back to sleep.<br />

“I go to bed about 10, I‟m always tired <strong>and</strong> I <strong>in</strong>variably 90% of the time go<br />

straight to sleep <strong>and</strong> I will wake one to two hours later feel<strong>in</strong>g as if it is time<br />

to get up.” [004 F55]<br />

Un-refresh<strong>in</strong>g sleep<br />

In the morn<strong>in</strong>g several participants also described feel<strong>in</strong>g un-refreshed which may be a<br />

result of the disturbed sleep throughout the night;<br />

“I‟ve quite often woke up feel<strong>in</strong>g more tired than when I went to bed.” [003<br />

F48]<br />

Negative thoughts <strong>and</strong> worry about sleep<br />

For several participants, go<strong>in</strong>g to bed had become a negative experience due to their<br />

sleep<strong>in</strong>g difficulties, <strong>and</strong> some participants reported develop<strong>in</strong>g negative thoughts <strong>and</strong><br />

expectations about sleep. Many had simply resigned themselves to the belief that their<br />

sleep quality would be poor.<br />

“If there‟s someth<strong>in</strong>g on my m<strong>in</strong>d, that makes me a bit worried about<br />

sleep<strong>in</strong>g, I don‟t know what it is but I sort of need to try <strong>and</strong> get to the<br />

bottom of it, but I sort of have this fear of go<strong>in</strong>g to bed.” [015 F21]<br />

Four participants also reported that they often worried about daily events <strong>and</strong> concerns<br />

while ly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> bed, which may prevent sleep onset:<br />

“If you‟re worried about one of the children or there‟s someth<strong>in</strong>g particular<br />

you‟re worried about.., you tend to sort of go over that <strong>in</strong> your m<strong>in</strong>d.” [002<br />

F48]<br />

Other triggers of disturbed sleep were identified as dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g alcohol, stress, worry, <strong>and</strong><br />

the need to ur<strong>in</strong>ate dur<strong>in</strong>g the night.<br />
