n is the number of size of a sample and S 2 is the variance of that sample. A signal to<br />

ratio is calculated for each treatment combination. Taguchi claims that treatment<br />

combination with largest true average signal-to noise ratio produces the least<br />

variation in the response variable. This can identify the factors that can reduce<br />

variation.<br />

4.5 Experimental design for CLFDM experiments<br />

Based on the extensive research done above, Taguchi‟s L8 design was selected to<br />

come up with a strategic design for the series of experiments. While the basic part<br />

for the experiments is the thin shell type part as already stated, the experimental<br />

design includes curvature of the part, speed and style of deposition as critical<br />

factors. The design matrix is built based on the Taguchi L8 orthogonal array<br />

considering each of these factors at two different levels. The design matrix is shown<br />

in Table 4.1.<br />
