Those who formerly entered this Order conse-
crated themselves to the service of the sick and
suffering, were constantly employed in works of
mercy, and devoted themselves to the service and
defence of the Christian faith. They were no longer
allowed to act for themselves ; but on the contrary
were obliged absolutely to renounce their own will
and pleasure, and implicitly to comply with that of
