innocent and the righteous ;<br />

and take no gift, for a<br />

gift blindeth the wise and perverteth the words of<br />

the righteous. Blessed are the peace-makers, for<br />

they shall see the Lord.<br />

J:. W.\ You shall have one manner of law, as well<br />

for the stranger as for one of your own country.<br />

One ordinance shall be for you and the stranger that<br />

sojourneth with you :<br />

be adjudged for all.<br />

one law and one custom shall<br />

T.'. I.\ Love justice, you that are the judges of<br />

the earth. Justice is perpetual and immortal. Op-<br />

press not the poor just man, but spare the widow,<br />

and honor the ancient gray hairs of the aged. Let<br />

not your strength be the law of justice, nor hold that<br />

which is feeble to be nothing worth.<br />

Let justice be ever meted out by you ; yet let it<br />

be tempered with mercy, for as ye judge, so shall ye<br />

be judged.<br />

My brother, it is your desire to become a Provost<br />

and Judge. Are you aware that he, who would assume<br />

that character and would judge and decide be-<br />

tween his brethren, must himself be a just and up-<br />

right man—impartial, cautious, merciful—of pure<br />

morals and blameless life and conversation—and<br />

that he must, first of all, give judgment against his<br />

own faults?<br />

He who would assume the character of Judge is
