Strabismus and<br />

Childhood <strong>Eye</strong> Disorders<br />

Dr. Velez’s primary research interest is studying the<br />

mechanisms of congenital and acquired forms of<br />

strabismus. He has participated in the development of<br />

guidelines for preoperative assessment and surgical<br />

approaches to patients with convergent (esotropia),<br />

divergent (exotropia), and vertical forms of strabismus,<br />

and has developed new techniques to treat pediatric<br />

patients with eyelid abnormalities and cataracts.<br />

Dr. Velez has recently completed studies that apply<br />

bioengineering technology to the correction of ocular<br />

motility disorders. He has also identified a new ocular<br />

motility disorder in patients with the human immunodeficiency<br />

virus.<br />
