Patient Care Services<br />
The <strong>Institute</strong>’s program of care for patients encompasses<br />
the full range of eye diseases. Nationally and<br />
internationally renowned faculty, along with highly<br />
skilled clinical fellows and physician residents, provide<br />
integrated consultation and treatment, including new<br />
diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that have been<br />
made available through recent scientific advances.<br />
<strong>Institute</strong> ophthalmologists are supported by optometrists,<br />
orthoptists, technicians, and nurses. Care is<br />
delivered in distinctive subspecialty treatment centers,<br />
service areas, and clinical laboratories, as well as in<br />
specially equipped ophthalmic surgical suites and a<br />
dedicated inpatient unit. The newly established UCLA<br />
<strong>Jules</strong> <strong>Stein</strong> <strong>Eye</strong> Center, Santa Monica, offers the<br />
premier service of the <strong>Jules</strong> <strong>Stein</strong> <strong>Eye</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> in a<br />
convenient neighborhood location.<br />
Faculty Consultation Service<br />
<strong>Institute</strong> faculty members provide direct consultation<br />
and treatment, including emerging therapies, to patients<br />
through the Ophthalmology Faculty Consultation<br />
Service. Faculty members have extensive, advanced<br />
training in ophthalmic subspecialties, providing refer-<br />
ring physicians and patients with a valuable resource<br />
for special eye problems.<br />
Inpatient Consultation Service<br />
<strong>Jules</strong> <strong>Stein</strong> <strong>Eye</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, Westwood<br />
The Ophthalmology Inpatient Consultation Service,<br />
operating 24 hours a day through the Ronald Reagan<br />
UCLA Medical Center, provides consultation and<br />
treatment to pediatric and adult patients admitted to<br />
the hospital’s medical, surgical, and psychiatric inpatient<br />
services. Led by Dr. Meryl L. Shapiro-Tuchin, the<br />
consultation team consists of physician-residents.<br />
Subspecialty coverage from faculty is provided<br />
as needed.<br />

<strong>Jules</strong> <strong>Stein</strong> <strong>Eye</strong> Center, Santa Monica<br />
The Ophthalmology Inpatient Consultation Service, operating<br />
through the <strong>Jules</strong> <strong>Stein</strong> <strong>Eye</strong> Center, Santa Monica,<br />
provides consultation and treatment to pediatric and<br />
adult patients admitted to the hospital’s medical,<br />
surgical, and psychiatric inpatient services. Led by<br />
Dr. Laura Bonelli, the consultation team consists of<br />
physician-residents. Subspecialty coverage from faculty<br />
is provided as needed.<br />
Surgical Services<br />
Ophthalmic surgery of all types, from cataract extraction<br />
to removal of ocular and orbital tumors, is performed in<br />
the <strong>Institute</strong>’s dedicated operating rooms. Additionally,<br />
laser vision-correction surgeries, such as laser-assisted<br />
in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), and certain aesthetic and<br />
retinal laser surgeries and injection procedures, are<br />
performed in designated outpatient procedure rooms.<br />
Faculty members perform surgical procedures according<br />
to their specific ophthalmic specialty. They are<br />
joined by other medical specialists, including anesthesiologists,<br />
nurses, and technicians to ensure the<br />
highest quality preoperative and postoperative care.<br />
University Ophthalmology Associates<br />
Comprehensive and subspecialty eye care in all medical<br />
and surgical areas of ophthalmology is offered through<br />
University Ophthalmology Associates. Dr. John D.<br />
Bartlett is medical director and ophthalmologists<br />
who are members of the UCLA Medical Group staff<br />
the practice.<br />
<strong>Jules</strong> <strong>Stein</strong> <strong>Eye</strong> Center, Santa Monica<br />
The <strong>Jules</strong> <strong>Stein</strong> <strong>Eye</strong> Center, under the direction of<br />
Dr. Colin A. McCannel, offers the world-renowned<br />
comprehensive and subspecialty eye care of the<br />
<strong>Jules</strong> <strong>Stein</strong> <strong>Eye</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> at a convenient new location<br />
in Santa Monica. Established in 2011, the <strong>Jules</strong> <strong>Stein</strong><br />
<strong>Eye</strong> Center features well-equipped exam rooms, an<br />
optical shop, convenient on-site parking for easy access,<br />
and testing facilities offering a wide range of examinations<br />
including visual field, corneal map (corneal<br />
topography), intraocular lens measurement, retinal<br />
imaging—including fluorescein angiography—and others.
