A SPECTACULAR VIEW OF BERGEN PAINTED BY NORWAY’S MOST FAMOUS AND IMPORTANT “PROSPEKTMALER”.
Dreier was born in Trondheim, but moved to Bergen c. 1800. His production of views of Bergen are important cultural and historical documents of
the period. The standpoint of the view is unusual as it is seen from Sandviken. The picture contents an incredible wealth of detailes and information
and the use of a magnifying glass is recommended in order to get the best impression. In the “Dreier-Exhibition” organized by Einar Lexow in
Bergen in 1917, only one example (no. 21) had the similar view, however it was unsigned and of a smaller size. Lexow dates that example to
1823-24. According to an estimate in Norsk kunstnerleksikon in 1982, only c. 170 original works by Dreier are known to still excist, many of them
owned by public collections.
In good condition with wide margins. Carefully cleaned.
