services and or Sexual Health Outreach Workers and their contact points.
They also suggested using the free postcard stands, which are now quite
widespread in places such as cinemas, clubs and pubs. They specifically
talked about nightclubs, which have under eighteen nights, schools and
libraries as suggested venues. The group also made suggestions about a
local radio campaign and suggested particular radio stations which may be of
use and which would reach young people. The group also suggested the use
of one leaflet which concertinas down to the size of a credit card, but which
contains information about contraception, sexual health services as well as
other things such as entertainment venues, youth clubs, cinemas etc. This
concertina leaflet could be divided into different sections, each section giving
details of a different geographical area and its services in County Durham and
Darlington, so that as well as there being individual leaflets per PCG area,
there would also be one county-wide leaflet which would include sexual health
information, but as part of a broader content.
In relation to the housing strategy, young people were concerned that if there
were one specific site, which housed teenage parents, it would lead to
stigmatisation and stereotyping. They favoured semi-independent housing
and floating support workers. They also favoured links between the young
people housed in such accommodation so that an informal network of social
support was available in a self-help way.
Consultation with groups of young people in County Durham is still on going.
We recognise that this consultation is limited, but is a starting point on which to
build and develop plans using young people’s ideas about what they would like
to see to help tackle teenage pregnancy.
• We will move forward by connecting with the agenda that young people
see as important linked to the issued raised by the Teenage Pregnancy
Unit and planned for by relevant joined up working in County Durham.
