Better Contraception And Advice Services Strategic Vision – County Durham Young people will be empowered and helped to use mainstream contraceptive services as they grow into adulthood. There will be a coordinated network of services, which will be easily accessible to all regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status or disability. The same quality of care will be available at which ever point of contact a young person accesses the service. There will be co-ordinated contraception and advice services, which are specifically dedicated to young people. (In ten years time young people may also be involved in service delivery). There will be a range of sources of contraception available to young people so that they feel comfortable with accessing contraception and advice services. 67
Contraception & Advice Service Risk Assessment SWOT Analysis Strengths • Committed individuals who will represent their organisations through partnership working (see weaknesses) • Staff flexibility • Good communication • Joint working between NHS Trusts, PCGs and General Practices • Staff working across settings + localities • Established working practices covering links between different working groups – e.g.: access to consultant: referral + community pathways (see next table) provision of condoms, pregnancy testing equipment, recent and ongoing service review. • Established policies for HR + clinical governance. • Contraception services are available in some non-clinical settings, supported by outreach nursing. Weaknesses • Lack of infrastructure for information gathering (still on paper) = needs to be updated in regard to I.T. (This needs to be compatible with the ‘GP systems’) (Across six PCG sites) (3 yrs). • Use of services by different ethnic group criteria is not yet monitored. • Lack of career structure for doctors + nurses working in Family Planning Services. • Translation services for groups or individuals including: Asian dialects only available on a one-off basis. This service needs further consideration. - Impact on access to services - Telephone provision (speakerphones – conference facilities) • Lack of permanent funding for subject’s area. Opportunities • (10 yrs) An agreement on co-ordinated service delivery across all Health providers. • Central Specialist Service within the provision of a core service and maximising on the current + future staffing complement + skill base, within general practice + community practices. • Developing the GP ‘Specialist Role’ (with associated pay structure) – currently operating in Darlington + evaluating well. Possible rollout programme across County Durham. • Working with Education on translation issues. • Service provision review in general practice clinics and other clinics to identify gaps in service and to identify agencies best able to fill the gap. • The service provision review in accordance with the Teenage Pregnancy Unit Best Practice Guidance will be acted upon appropriately at a local level. 68
