3) Addressing single gender work and the needs of boys and young men • Continue to use the Healthy Schools Standards, ensuring equality and equity of provision. • Continue to liaise with young people to identify their needs. • Continue to work closely with Investors in Children. • Youth Workers to continue assessing and prioritising needs, their own as well as young peoples needs. • Continue to encourage young men to access services re: Family Planning Clinics and Young Peoples Centres, through information given in schools, Colleges, Youth Clubs and Leisure Centres. Lead Youth & Community Workers, LEA, Health Promotion Services, Community Education. Timescale • On-going work working with groups of young people and on one-to-one. • 1 year – essential that funding is continued for voluntary organisations, providing young people’s services i.e. End House Young Peoples Centre. 4) In-service training and support for professionals, governors and parents/carers At present: • TROCN (Tees Regional Open College Network). Level III, an accredited programme is being offered for people who have a remit for, and an interest in, working in the field of sexual health promotion. This programme is in conjunction with Tees Open College Network and Specialist Health Promotion Services in County Durham (and Darlington) Primary Care Group. • School & Governor Support Unit on board. • Dedicated post in Easington. • Course for Governors – (Sex Education – Your School – Your Responsibility) gives them the opportunity to discuss new issues pertaining to sex and relationship education, and how to implement/improve sex education in their particular school. 57
• Training for the trainers – set up when need identified. • School Nursing Service works closely with Schools & Health Promotion Service. • Regular up-dates for school nurses to take place at the beginning of each term – needs identified by the school nurses. • Training and updating on issues pertaining to young people and sexual health, has been undertaken by all members of Primary Health Care Teams in one local PCG area. Other PCG areas are at present planning similar programmes. • Courses for parents have been held in one PCG area. Future Plans • Develop TROCN Level III for teaching staff – a focussed shorter course which may depend on the availability of teachers able to attend. 2001 - Establish a multi-disciplinary working group. 2002 - Submission of the training programme. Develop or identify relevant training for Youth Workers, Education Social Workers, Residential Social Workers. • Develop TROCN Level II for parents and carers including foster parents by: 2001 - establishing a multi-agency working group. 2002 - Submission of the training programme. • Support in-school programmes for INSET. 2002 - with the development of distance learning materials. • Work with the Governors through the Governor Support Unit of County Durham (& Darlington). • Encourage participation by parents and carers – other local training events through the school and Health Promotion Services. • Identify staff training needs through the Healthy Schools Standard Audit. • Carry out audit of current training opportunities. • Joint training events for all involved in delivering/or working in the field of Sexual Health Promotion. • Joint working with LEA, Health Promotion Services, Community Education, Connexions, Youth Workers and School Nursing Service. 58
