ADVISORIES: ESL 6A, 6B with a satisfactory grade or appropriate placement scorel for speakers of English as a second<br />

language. PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Comm 73 and Comm 60C. CO-REQUISITE: Students in Comm 76<br />

must enroll in Comm 60D. May NOT be taken concurrently with any other 1- to 3-unit Communication Studies class.<br />

Students accomplish speaking English as a second language fluently during in-class discussions and presentations. They<br />

may have adequate reading, grammatical and writing skills but acquire more skills with specific areas of articulation,<br />

pronunciation, fluency and oral composition when presenting speeches and conversing in small groups. This is a level<br />

COMMUNICATION STUDIES 091 (FORMERLY SPEECH 61 - FIRST TIME) - SPEECH LABORATORY I -<br />

1.00 UNITS<br />

ADVISORIES: Comm 76 and Comm 60D or English 28 and English 67 with a satisfactory grade or appropriate<br />

placement score. Students learn about their own areas of speech functioning that require intervention such as adjusting<br />

respiration, phonation, resonation, articulation and cerebration. Results of an evaluation will become the basis of an<br />

educational plan of speech communication exercises. Students also learn the basic procedures for using computer-aided<br />

speech exercises and acquire fundamental skills in recording orally read text, analyzing their speech production and rerecording<br />

to accomplish mastery of new speech patterns. Students produce these newly acquired patterns within a speech<br />

rate range of 60-89 words per minute and 90% mastery of the assigned speech tasks.<br />

PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Comm 91. Students learn to differentiate their second set of speech<br />

functioning areas that require intervention based on what was accomplished in the prior level and results of an updated<br />

Level Two evaluation. A second level educational plan of speech communication exercises is developed. Students use<br />

computer-aided speech exercises and acquire mastery of more complex speech patterns by recording and analyzing their<br />

speech production followed by re-recording it. Students produce these newly acquired patterns within a speech rate range<br />

of 90-119 words per minute and 90% mastery of the assigned speech tasks.<br />

speech functioning areas that require intervention based on the results of a third evaluation. A third level educational plan<br />

of speech communication exercises is developed. Students use computer-aided speech exercises and conversational<br />

practice dialogues to apply complex integrated speech tasks. Recording and analyzing their speech production followed by
