time student is fifty-four hours a week, including classwork <strong>and</strong> independent studies. <strong>The</strong><br />

instructional hours are thirty-six hours a week. For part-time<br />

(evening) education, classwork amounts to sixteen hours per week. In <strong>the</strong> case<br />

of correspondence education, each student must be provided with at least 160 contact hours a<br />

year.<br />

Coursework includes humanities, business administration, law, <strong>Russian</strong> language,<br />

ma<strong>the</strong>matics, <strong>and</strong> informatics. O<strong>the</strong>r subjects are professionally oriented <strong>and</strong> divided between<br />

general subjects within <strong>the</strong> chosen field of study <strong>and</strong> specialisation subjects. In addition,<br />

programs include compulsory external professional practicum. Programs conclude with a<br />

supervised diploma project which must be defended, <strong>and</strong> final examinations.<br />

Types of Institutions Offering Higher Vocational Education in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Federation</strong><br />

Most higher vocational programs are offered in disciplines such as technology,<br />

agronomy, business, services, teaching, health (allied medical professions), culture <strong>and</strong> art.<br />

Institutions are usually named according to <strong>the</strong>ir area of specialisation.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Federation</strong>, <strong>the</strong>re are three types of institutions of higher vocational<br />

education:<br />

1.) tehnikum (техникум),<br />

2.) uchilishche (училище), <strong>and</strong><br />

3.) college (колледж, kolledzh).<br />

1.) Typical uchilishche programs of higher vocational education provide training for<br />

occupations in services, health, teaching (pre-school or primary), <strong>and</strong> art. 1 Examples of higher<br />

vocational uchilishche are medical uchilishche, pedagogical uchilishche, etc.<br />

2.) <strong>The</strong> tehnikum typically provides programs in technology <strong>and</strong> business.<br />

3.) Educational programs of colleges, in addition to <strong>the</strong> educational programs for<br />

tehnikum <strong>and</strong> uchilishche, include more in-depth <strong>the</strong>oretical education <strong>and</strong> professional training<br />

for up to one additional year. Colleges can be independent educational institutions or constituent<br />

parts of higher education institutions. Colleges may also award <strong>the</strong> Diploma of Incomplete<br />

Higher Education that can be used for entry into year three of a Bachelor or Specialist program<br />
