professional title such as Engineer, Teacher, etc.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Diploma of "Specialist" required five years of full-time study for most majors. Only<br />

a small number of programs required four years of study, such as some teaching qualifications.<br />

Programs in architecture required five-<strong>and</strong>-a-half years of study. <strong>The</strong> program in medicine<br />

required six years; in addition students undertook one year of specialisation practice (<strong>the</strong><br />

internatura) in a selected field of medicine. O<strong>the</strong>r disciplines, such as geology <strong>and</strong> certain<br />

branches of engineering, technology, <strong>and</strong> fine arts also required six years of study. A typical<br />

Diploma of "Specialist" program represented 4,500 to 5,500 hours of instruction in<br />

approximately 20 to 34 subjects depending on <strong>the</strong> specialisation.<br />

State Final Examination<br />

<strong>The</strong> State Final Examination stage consisted of <strong>the</strong> state final examinations <strong>and</strong> defence<br />

of a final research project. <strong>The</strong> final research project was expected to be of independent research<br />

or scholarship. It was defended before <strong>the</strong> State Examination Commission. <strong>The</strong> chairman of <strong>the</strong><br />

commission was appointed by <strong>the</strong> State Committee for Public Education on <strong>the</strong> recommendation<br />

of <strong>the</strong> rector of <strong>the</strong> institution. Members of <strong>the</strong> Commission were appointed by <strong>the</strong> rector <strong>and</strong><br />

included faculty <strong>and</strong> industry representatives. Additionally, <strong>the</strong> State Examination Commission<br />

examined each student in <strong>the</strong> field of specialisation.<br />

A school or vocational education credential:<br />

• Certificate of Completion of Secondary Education (Attestat o<br />

Srednem (Polnom) Obshchem Obrazovanii), or<br />

• A diploma of vocational education that includes complete<br />

secondary education (for fur<strong>the</strong>r details see <strong>the</strong> chapter on<br />

Vocational/Technical Education)<br />

AND<br />

• Oral <strong>and</strong> written entrance examinations set by individual<br />

institutions for entry into different specialisations or areas of study.<br />

<strong>The</strong> typical number of exams is three to five.<br />

Additional Admission Considerations<br />

1 If entering on <strong>the</strong> basis of completed secondary education. Students may also be admitted directly into <strong>the</strong> program<br />

on <strong>the</strong> basis of a Bachelor's degree. However, that route is not as common.<br />
