RUBY 7 RATHBOXE (Daniel6 Joshua , 5 . John 4 . John 3 ,
John 2 , Richard 1
), born in Town of Richmond, Mass.. Dec.
29, 1769; married Jonas Allen in Milton. Saratoga Co.. X.
Y., Feb. 22. 1800; she died Sept. 10. 1844. He was born in
Dover, Dutchess Co.. X. Y.. July 8. 1761. He removed to
West Stockbridge. Berkshire Co.. Mass., with his father in
1784 or 5. In Feb. — . 1797 he removed to Bloomfield. On-
tario Co., X. Y.. now Mendon. (This town was set oft from
Bloomfield) where he purchased a farm and lived on it until
his death. July 20. 1826. Allen met Ruby in^West Stockbridge,
Mass.. where he for some time lived. Rubv's father
and her uncle, John Rathbone visited her at Mendon (then
Bloomfield) about the year 1807 or 8. This country was
then called the wilderness Their daughter, Althea was the
first white female child born in the town of Mendon. X. Y.
Rev. John and Daniel held religious meetings at her house
for several days. Althea never married: she died at Mendon
Jan. 22, 1886. In the term of her membership she was the
oldest member of the Presbyterian church in Mendon. At
her funeral, conducted by Rev. S. A. Freeman, assisted by
Rev. J. K. Kilbourn of Mendon, an extract was read from
the church records, dated Feb. 6th. 183 1, giving the names
of fifteen persons on that day received into church fellowship.
Among them were the names of her sister and sister's husband,
and her brother George and his wife, a sister of Dr.
Sheldon, of which company she was the last survivor. Her
body was laid to rest in the family plot of the sightly and
well kept cemetery adjacent to the Baptist church, overlooking
the village of Mendon. The orderly and tasteful arrangement
of this cemetery is largely due to the personal care and
labor of Miss Allen's brother Daniel, who has for vears devoted
much of his leisure to it. Jonas Allen's father had a
printed notice served on him to leave the town in 24 hours
as he had a large family and no visible means to support
them. He staid, however and soon owned real estate which
his family owns to this day. 1894. Children:
