daughter of Job and Debora (Welch) <strong>Rathbone</strong>. Aug. 2j,<br />

1797; she was born Dec. 6, 1777. He died Nov. 17, 1S26,<br />

from injuries received by a falling timber when raising a<br />

beam to a building. He was married at his wife's father's<br />

house in Colchester. Conn., and soon after removed to Warren,<br />

Conn. After living there a few years he removed to<br />

Otsego Co. and from there to Howard, Steuben Co., N. Y.,<br />

1808. He and his brother Job B. were the first <strong>Rathbone</strong>s<br />

who settled in Steuben Co., N. Y. Children:<br />

1. Elizabeth W., b. in Springfield, Otsego Co., N. Y-, Aug. 27,<br />

1804: m. Eben Bartholomew.<br />

2. Anna Eliza, b. in Warren, Conn., 1S01; d. Aug., 1879.<br />

), born<br />

Aug. 27, 1804: married Eben Bartholomew, Jan. 17. 1828.<br />

He was born in Whitehall. Washington Co., X. Y.. March<br />

30, 1805. He in 1889 still resided on the farm purchased by<br />

his father when he first located in Steuben Co.. in 1819; she<br />

died . 1886. Children:<br />

1. Elizabeth, b- Aug. t, 1830; she graduated at Alfred institute<br />

in 185 1 ; became a teacher in Hornellsville public schools in 1855. which<br />

position she held in 1S86; she died in Elsinore. N. Y., Dec. 19, 1S91; was<br />

buried at Howard, N. Y.<br />

2. Annie Eliza, b. Feb. 1, 1834; d. Sept. 2, 1857.<br />

), born<br />

in New London, Conn., May 15. 1784; married Frances,<br />

daughter of Mason Brown of Howard, wither she had gone<br />

to visit a sister Oct. 15. 1818. He died Feb. 12, 1856, at<br />

Howard where he had lived since the first settlement of the<br />

town; she died Aug. 2. 1880, at the same place. Job B. was<br />

a man of indomitable will and perseverance, uniting those<br />

qualities with industry and a faculty to save: he accumulated<br />

a large property, which at his death, his children inherited.<br />

While Washington and Hibbard W., sons of Job<br />

and Debora W. <strong>Rathbone</strong> were prominent citizens in good<br />

circumstances, Job B. accumulated more property and was<br />

equally as influential. His wife Frances, was born in Colches-<br />

ter, Conn., March 24, 1791. He is said to have been a lively<br />

lad in his youth. It was said that his sending a challenge to<br />

fight a duel was the cause of his emigrating to Steuben.
