was for three terms a member of the Legislature of the State
of New York, was chairman of the commissioners of the
Prisons and Penitentiaries of the State. He has been for
several years one of the managers of the city and state's
prison at Elmira. X. Y. When Governor Seymour called for
75.000 men to be sent at once to protect the northern terri-
tories, there was no monev in the state or national treasury
to furnish the troops with needed supplies. He with others,
furnished $80,000 and sent the first regiment to the front
under the call. He died at Elmira. X. Y.. Jan. 2$, 1893. and
