17, 1806; married Lucy Gould Redheld at Silver Greek, N.<br />

Y.; she was born June 6, 1816; she died at Grand Rapids,<br />

Mich., , 1844. He married, second, Caroline Amelia<br />

Van Tyle of Owasco, near Auburn. X. Y., ; she was<br />

born April 9, 1822. He studied law with Hon. Thomas G.<br />

How at Brownville. Jefferson Co., X. Y.. was admitted to<br />

the bar and law there. From thence he removed to Silver<br />

Creek, X. Y\. and from there he removed to Grand Rapids,<br />

Mich. He was prosecuting attorney for Kent Co.,; ran for<br />

State Senator, but was beaten by W. D. Foster, the Whigcandidate<br />

in 1840. Shortly after he settled at Grand Rapids<br />

he was appointed its postmaster. He was a careful and safe<br />

financier, lived always on less than his income. He adopted<br />

that rule before marriage and never broke it. His savings<br />

he invested mostly in real estate, which before his death became<br />

valuable. He willed his real estate to his grandchildren,<br />

his children having the income during their fives. He<br />

practiced law until his last sickness. He was stricken with<br />

paralysis and died April 5. 1856. Children, born in Grand<br />
