Costs <strong>of</strong> training<br />

As well as the differences in educational levels, there were differences in the<br />

cost <strong>of</strong> training. The cost <strong>of</strong> becoming a chemist and druggist was much<br />

greater than that encountered when becoming an apothecaries‘ assistant.<br />

Those wishing to join the pharmaceutical pr<strong>of</strong>ession had first to pay a<br />

premium <strong>of</strong> 200 to 300 guineas to obtain an apprenticeship. 177 On the<br />

registration <strong>of</strong> his indentures, from 1 July 1842, the pharmacy student had<br />

to pay a subscription, <strong>of</strong> five shillings provided his master was a member <strong>of</strong><br />

the Society and ten shillings and sixpence if he were not. 178 By 1853, the fee<br />

for the ‗classical‘ examination and registration as an apprentice or student<br />

had been combined and increased to two guineas. The fee for the ‗minor‘<br />

examination and registration as an assistant was three guineas, unless he<br />

had not previously registered as an apprentice, when it was five guineas. 179<br />

In August 1857, the fee for the ‗classical‘ examination or for<br />

presenting the equivalent certificates was still two guineas, but this entitled<br />

candidates to student membership until they had completed their<br />

indentures, or until they were 21 years old. In the same year the fee for the<br />

‗minor‘ examination and registration as an assistant was five guineas, while<br />

those who had previously registered as an apprentice paid only three<br />
