the Association should take such action as it thought fit. 42<br />

A year later, the Clerk attended one <strong>of</strong> the Association‘s meetings and<br />

reported that there had been, ―… a very strong opinion among its members<br />

that the Society ought to take some active steps to secure a better position<br />

for the holders <strong>of</strong> the certificate who were gradually being excluded from<br />

being allowed to compete for appointments as dispensers.‖ 43 A resolution<br />

was drawn up at the 1919 Annual General Meeting <strong>of</strong> the Association<br />

stating that it viewed ―… with the gravest disquietude the failure <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Society … to take appropriate action in the matter <strong>of</strong> the loss <strong>of</strong> their former<br />

status as dispensers.‖ It called for a committee to be formed to address the<br />

present position <strong>of</strong> the assistants. 44 Finally in 1922 the Association directed<br />

Mr Bott, ―to express extreme regret at the non possumus attitude taken by<br />

the parent society.‖ It thought that should the Society ―… still be obdurate<br />

in carrying out the necessary reforms …‖ it would be better permanently to<br />

discontinue the assistant‘s examination than to disappoint future<br />

candidates. 45<br />

While the Association <strong>of</strong> Certified Dispensers had been urging the<br />

Society <strong>of</strong> Apothecaries to plead their case with other interested parties,<br />

they had themselves been in contact with the Pharmaceutical Society and<br />
