important modifications <strong>of</strong> the leaf. To have a practical knowledge <strong>of</strong> the<br />

various arrangements <strong>of</strong> leaves or flowers in the bud, and <strong>of</strong> the different<br />

kinds <strong>of</strong> phyllotaxis and <strong>of</strong> inflorescence; to understand the principles <strong>of</strong><br />

branching, and the different kinds <strong>of</strong> branch systems. To possess a general<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> the processes <strong>of</strong> reproduction <strong>of</strong> plants, and to describe those <strong>of</strong><br />

phanerogams and ferns. To name and describe the arrangements <strong>of</strong> the<br />

parts <strong>of</strong> the flower, the number, position and shape <strong>of</strong> the floral envelopes<br />

and <strong>of</strong> the organs <strong>of</strong> reproduction, to name and describe the different kinds<br />

<strong>of</strong> fruits, and the various modes <strong>of</strong> dehiscence and kinds <strong>of</strong> placentation. To<br />

have a general knowledge <strong>of</strong> the physiology <strong>of</strong> plants, and to describe the<br />

functions <strong>of</strong> the roots, stems and leaves. To be acquainted with the<br />

materials which form the food <strong>of</strong> plants, and to understand the part played<br />

by starch, sugar, and aleurone grains in the life <strong>of</strong> the plant. To recognise,<br />

by means <strong>of</strong> the microscope, sections <strong>of</strong> stems <strong>of</strong> cicotyledonous,<br />

monocotyledonous and cryptogramic plants; spiral, reticulated, and<br />
