Health Care <strong>Plan</strong> For:<br />

Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) Shunt Malfunction<br />

Description:<br />

A V-P Shunt is for control of hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is a<br />

condition characterized by abnormal accumulation of cerebral spinal fluid with<br />

in the skull. V-.P Shunts are all subject to mechanical difficulties, such as<br />

kinking, plugging, or migration of tubing. Malfunction is most often caused by<br />

mechanical obstruction. In some instances, a shunt will malfunction as a result<br />

of infection.<br />

Signs/Symptoms to Watch For:<br />

1. Intense headache.<br />

2. Vomiting (may be projectile).<br />

3. Altered level of consciousness.<br />

4. Unusually sleepy or irritable.<br />

5. Student may complain of pain or stiffness in neck area.<br />

6. Possibility of increased temperature.<br />

7. Eyelids will be puffy and swollen.<br />

8. Decreased academic functioning.<br />

9. Dilated or unequal pupils.<br />

Intervention:<br />

1. CALL 911<br />

2. Notify Parent.<br />

3. Notify <strong>District</strong> Nurse.<br />

4. KEEP STUDENT IN AN UPRIGHT POSITION. DO NOT GIVE FLUIDS OR FOOD.<br />

5. Monitor vital signs and symptoms. Reassure student and keep student comfortable.<br />

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MANIPULATE THE SHUNT, SUCH AS PUMPING OR<br />

APPLYING PRESSURE.<br />
