Health Care <strong>Plan</strong> For:<br />

SEVERE ALLERGIC (ANAPHYLACTIC) REACTION.<br />

Description:<br />

Anaphylactic reaction is a generalized systemic reaction, which may be lifethreatening,<br />

resulting from the administration of foreign substances or<br />

drugs, from the digestion of foods, or from the sting of an insect.<br />

Medication:<br />

EPI-PEN<br />

Signs/Symptoms to Watch For:<br />

1. Student may have itchy or scratchy feeling in throat and /or ears. Whites of eyes may be reddened.<br />

Eyes may show signs of swelling.<br />

2. Coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. May use chest and neck muscles to assist with<br />

breathing. May have flaring of nostrils.<br />

3. Drooling or difficulty swallowing (unable to swallow normally). Hoarse voice or change in voice.<br />

4. May have facial pallor or blueness around the mouth.<br />

5. Student may become apprehensive, withdrawn or not be able to verbalize what is happening. May<br />

lose consciousness.<br />

Intervention:<br />

1. ***CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY***<br />

2. Administer EPI-PEN: Remove Epi-Pen from plastic container. Pull off gray safety cap. Place<br />

black tip of Epi-Pen on lateral thigh area and push hard. Hold Epi-Pen in place for 10<br />

seconds. Document time Epi-Pen was administered.<br />

3. If Second Epi-Pen has been prescribed and student has shown little relief from above stated<br />

symptoms, administer second Epi-Pen.<br />

4. Insure an adequate airway. Perform CPR if needed.<br />

5. Monitor vital signs and symptoms. Reassure student and keep student comfortable.<br />

6. Notify Parent or Legal Guardian. Notify <strong>District</strong> Nurse.<br />

STUDENT MUST ALWAYS BE TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL<br />
